Karigar Shala was established by a group of individuals who bring a comprehensive range of knowledge and skill sets to the institution.
Our team comprises of master artisans, architects, engineers, designers, artists, educators, and social workers, each offering unique expertise that enriches both the learning environment and the institution's structure.
The governing board plays a vital role in upholding the values and ethos of Karigar Shala while shaping its long-term vision and strategy. Their work is organised through sub-committees on finance, programme, executive, and outreach, enabling members to focus their collective efforts on targeted and coherent initiatives. This structure helps ensure that Karigar Shala remains responsive and effective in its operations.
Our faculty forms the foundation of our teaching and learning environment. Full-time educators and practitioners guide students through practical training and classroom discussions, providing a comprehensive learning experience. They support each learner's development while emphasising character, responsibility, and collaborative practice.
Furthermore, visiting faculty from diverse fields, such as craft and design, engineering, and the arts, enrich the programme with new perspectives, techniques, and exposure to visual aesthetics. Their presence broadens student’s exposure, connecting classroom learning with wider professional and cultural practices. This mix of permanent and visiting faculty ensures students receive consistent guidance alongside fresh insights from different disciplines.
The governing board, faculty, and extended team collaboratively establish Karigar Shala as a space where learning and making are intertwined, emphasising the growth of robust pedagogical practices.

Kiran Vgahela
FOUNDER
A civil engineer by training and a self-taught architect, Kiran Vaghela draws on the wisdom of artisans and traditional building systems to create resilient, contemporary architecture. As the founder and mentor of Karigar Shala, he is dedicated and passionate about sharing his wisdom and knowledge as he works with students, artisans, and communities, nurturing skills, inspiring innovation, and opening pathways for young people to explore education, creativity, and enterprise through hands-on learning and collaboration. He is the founding director of Hunnarshala Foundation and a partner at Studio Dot.

Rajesh Vora
PRESIDENT
A graduate of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Vora has been working as a photographer for over 35 years. His work reflects a deep concern for the environment, shrinking habitats, and urban issues, leading to collaborations with architects, environmentalists, and filmmakers. Widely published and internationally exhibited, he has supported Karigar Shala since 2016, contributing his experience and expertise in documentation, outreach, and design. His extensive knowledge and contemporary approach help Karigar Shala remain grounded and relevant in the outside world.

Prajesh Jethwa
VICE PRESIDENT
With a background in management and 17 years of experience at Hunnarshala Foundation, Prajesh Jethwa has made significant contributions to international projects through client engagement, proposal development, and documentation. He now serves as Senior Manager at Sankalan, promoting eco-sensitive construction, and as Director at So Hath, supporting artisan livelihoods. Closely linked to Karigar Shala since 2011, he currently acts as a working trustee. His skills in operations, combined with his empathetic qualities, help the Karigar Shala remain grounded and focused on future goals.

Atul Vyas
SECRETARY
Since 2011, Atul has overseen the daily operations of Karigar Shala while also teaching mathematics, life sciences, and environmental awareness. With a patient and empathetic manner, he supports students throughout their learning journeys and remains connected even after they graduate. His dedication demonstrates a balance of discipline and care, nurturing confidence and growth both inside and outside the classroom.

Kamlesh Barmeda
JOINT SCRETARY
With a postgraduate qualification in Cost Accounting from Gujarat University and diplomas in computer applications and Tally, Kamlesh has nearly 30 years of experience in finance and NGO management. He has worked with KMVS, Sahjeevan, and Hunnarshala. At Karigar Shala Trust, he oversees governance, finances, and MIS, ensuring systems operate smoothly.

Hitesh Changela
TUSTEE
With over 20 years of experience in academia and practice, Hitesh specialises in sustainable design, participatory housing, and universal accessibility. Passionate about architectural history and traditional knowledge, he has documented and studied alternative practices across Western India. Closely linked with Hunnarshala and Karigar Shala, he promotes active, craft-based learning and strives to make construction knowledge accessible to all. He is a faculty member at IPSA, Rajkot.

Sankalpa
TRUSTEE
Sankalpa is a dedicated architect who passionately combines design, detailing, and sustainable building practices in his work. As an Associate Professor and Programme Chair of the Master's in Architectural Tectonics at CEPT University, he actively explores new materials and emphasises ecological responsibility. As a member of the Bamboo Society of India, he promotes hands-on learning, craftsmanship, and innovation in materials, continually inspiring new trends in construction and design. Plus, he's the Co-Founder of Thumb Impression LLP.

Savia Mahajan
TRUSTEE
An accomplished artist and ceramist from Mumbai, Savia Mahajan, has showcased her work in prominent exhibitions and residencies both in India and internationally. Her deep passion for art drives her to explore the core of materials, consistently experimenting and innovating with unique ceramic techniques. Recently, she has been collaborating with artisans to expand the scope of her sculptures. Through her involvement with the trust, she is committed to supporting the social sector and engaging in a vibrant, wholesome educational movement that emphasises hands-on learning and indigenous knowledge.

Punit Soni
TRUSTEE
With over 20 years in commerce and rural development, Punit has dedicated himself to revitalising traditional crafts, especially Kachchh embroidery. His efforts combine enterprise growth, skill development, and social empowerment, helping communities preserve their heritage and build livelihoods. He is committed to supporting craft micro-enterprises and promoting cultural and ecological resilience. Punit is a Director at Qasab, Vice President of the Kutch Craft Collective, and a trustee at Karigar Shala. He contributes to shaping the future of craft education and improves educational programmes focused on craft and entrepreneurship.

Kiran Suthar

With over 25 years in the building industry, Kiran Suthar is a dedicated and talented carpenter who specialises in working with Wood, metal, and glass. He's well-known for his accuracy and problem-solving abilities, consistently placing a high value on safety and quality. Sunil Dhadhar
MASONRY& BUILDING FINISHES
An alumnus of Karigar Shala, Sunil specialises in Masonry & Building Finishes and has collaborated closely with local artisans, acquiring practical experience in masonry and building crafts. Passionate about learning and teaching, he now works as the faculty member for masonry and earthen techniques at Karigar Shala, guiding students in both hands-on skills and technical drawing to promote design and creativity. He has also taken part in workshops at architecture colleges.

Ravi Devariya
FACULTY - CARPENTRY

ARTISAN
A skilled and dedicated artisan, Sumal Ben has been with Karigar Shala since its inception. She played a leading role in Karigar Shala's women's training programme, actively sharing her knowledge and inspiring other women artisans. Through her work, she shows a strong commitment to preserving traditional building techniques and fostering community learning.

Amruth Kaur Singwal
CARE TAKER
A nurturing and dedicated caregiver, Amrut Ben has been with Karigar Shala since 2011, preparing nutritious meals for students with care and attention. Beyond cooking, she offers discipline, emotional support, and guidance, playing a steady and supportive role in students' daily lives and fostering the school's warm, caring environment.
