About Us

Over the past 14 years, Karigar Shala has developed into an independent organisation with a clear and meaningful vision, driven by a dedicated purpose. It combines practical training with theoretical learning through hands-on projects grounded in rich cultural and traditional building craft techniques.

Legal Framework of the Organisation

Karigar Shala Trust, officially registered under The Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950 (Bom. Act No. 29 of 1950), operates within a defined legal and ethical framework.

Innovative Educational Approach Focused on Holistic Development

Our educational philosophy broadens the traditional concept of learning, aiming to nurture confident, skilled, and empathetic individuals. We focus on developing learners who are knowledgeable about the modern world and capable of making meaningful contributions to society while maintaining dignity and respect in their pursuits.

Experiential Pedagogy and Practical Skills Development

Our teaching method focuses on experiential learning, where students acquire knowledge through direct interaction with materials, processes, and environments. We promote practical skills and understanding often absent from mainstream education by combining respect for traditional knowledge systems with modern tools and techniques. Our programmes also emphasise essential life skills and climate awareness, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, merging maker culture with thoughtful reflection.

Acknowledging the Value of Experential Learning Methods for Skill Growth

Based on our experience, this innovative educational approach shows great potential for official recognition as a qualification in practical skills like craftsmanship and visual aesthetics—especially in rural India, where artisanal knowledge is demonstrated through skilled craftsmanship.

Our Ongoing Commitment to Innovation, Inclusivity, and Expanding Educational Opportunities

Karigar Shala is committed to ongoing innovation, fostering inclusivity, and expanding access to quality education. We strive to inspire hope for a future where every child is included, regardless of their learning style or background.

A Visionary Perspective on Transforming Education Paradigms

We believe these initiatives are crucial for transforming traditional education paradigms into more inclusive, experiential, and skill-focused learning models.

Programmes

Karigar Shala is a residential programme that provides practical education in carpentry, masonry, and earthen techniques. Lasting one and a half years across three semesters, it combines hands-on training with theoretical learning through real-world projects. The programme links experiential learners with students engaged in formal education, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and continuity between traditional and modern methods. It also promotes environmental responsibility and offers opportunities for self-reliance and livelihood.
